Writing With Reuben
English Speaking š£ļø Workshop Pointers
1) Be confident
It is hard to speak confidently when we are speaking a language we have not fully acquired. Remind yourself of how you speak in your first language. Remember that you are learning and always growing in competence. Confidence will follow.
2)Lead your reading
When reading, take your time and go at a steady pace. Not so fast, you miss important stress or emphasis, not so slow you lose engagement and momentum. Do not be led by the writing, like on a leash, worried about getting it right. Lead the writing- by following the prompts of pronunciation and punctuation and read by telling your listeners a story. Hold attention and engage them through relevant stress and emphasis where necessary and intriguing intonation which will add colour and interest to whatever you are reading.
3) New Vocabulary integrationĀ
Learning new words can and should be fun. Make a game of learning one new word a week. That is one word every seven days, four new words every month. The game here is to, as naturally as you can manage, use your new word in a sentence of writing and in conversation. You get bonus points for listening out for your new word of the week in discussion or media.
4) Research idioms and practiceIdioms are funny, witty and generally clever ways of painting images to get across meaning within expression to express a point or emotion. Native speakers use these regularly-they are baked into the language and to use themĀ is to sound more native.
5)Read out loud!
Read books (check out the library below!), listen to the radio, podcasts & watch TV (check out Lingopie).
